According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea,

South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. opened the Project Ioniq Lab that will lead the company’s research and development projects on future vehicles.

Hyundai Motor said in a disclosure statement on Tuesday that it held an opening ceremony of the Project Ioniq Lab center at a business complex in Pangyo, south of Seoul.

The Project Ioniq Lab is a part of the Project Ioniq that the auto maker unveiled in March at the Geneva International Auto Show with a goal to spearhead the future auto technology. The name Project Ioniq comes from the Korean automaker’s electric vehicle that is equipped with environmentally-friendly power train lineups for hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric cars.

The Project Ioniq Lab will run on a so-called open innovation system that incorporates both internal and external information and experts to better predict the future of the auto industry and prepare for the upcoming changes.

At the opening ceremony of the lab, the company presented 12 trends that are expected to have big impact on the auto industry in the future, which include super-connected society, super-aged society and environmentally-friendliness.

With the launch of its new research project, Hyundai Motor plans to carry out various studies on auto technologies with a focus on four core areas - ease of use, close ties with daily life, protection against possible accidents, and securing energy source meeting environment protection requirements.

At the Project Ioniq Lab, a team of 10 researchers will oversee research planning and operation while a group of 10 local and foreign specialists from various fields such as future society, engineering, and arts will offer various advices.

“We will make endless efforts to study cars and bring forth the innovation in future transportation,” said Cho Won-hong, vice president at Hyundai Motor as he celebrated the opening of the Project Ioniq Lab.
