South Korea’s leading telecommunications company SK Telecom Co. and Nokia, a global provider of network infrastructure and related services, have jointly developed the next-generation wireless communication technology that would allow seamless communication among hundreds of rescue workers at times of massive disasters by using a dedicated channel.

SK Telecom said on Monday that it and Nokia together developed the Mission-Critical Push-To-Talk (MCPTT) solution based on VoLTE that realizes high quality voice calls over a fourth-generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. MCPTT ensures high-quality communications and supports stable group communication even when there is a surge in users, and it is the world’s first MCPTT solution, the company claimed.

SK Telecom and Nokia succeeded in demonstrating the new technology at the Nokia Research Center in Krakow, Poland, last week.

SK Telecom plans to make forays into the United States and the United Kingdom to establish disaster safety networks. It also plans to adopt the MCPTT solution in Korea’s Public Safety-LTE (PS-LTE) network and LTE-R, which is the LTE mobile telecommunication technology for railway, network systems, SK Telecom said in a statement.

“SK Telecom will continue to contribute to the successful completion of the public safety network project in Korea, while actively seeking new business opportunities in the global market,” said Shim Sang-soo, Senior Vice President and Head of Infra Business Promotion Office.
