(ANDONG=Yonhap News) North Gyeongsang Province will spend a total of KRW 156 billion until 2020 to create a marine tourism and leisure sports belt along the eastern coast.
Last year, the Province had spent KRW 14.8 billion, and plans to inject KRW 15.4 billion more into the project this year.
To expand its tourism resources, the Province will build a marine park on idle coastal land at Pohang Old Port (KRW 10 billion) and a landmark "water folly" at Dongbinnae Port (KRW 5 billion) in Pohang, as well as a water-themed parkin Gyeongju along the Hyeongsan River (KRW 8 billion).
A stretch of idle coastal land at Ganggu Port in Yeongdeok (KRW 9.6 billion) is also being developed, along with the beautification of Chuksan Port (KRW 9 billion), and a public waterfront for marine tourism in Namyang-ri, Ulleung.
In addition, the Pohang Hyeongsan River Water Leisure Town (KRW 9 billion), the Uljin Underwater Park (KRW 9 billion) and the Yeongdeok-Uljin Marine Leisure Sports Center will be linked to form a marine tourism belt, which will be utilized for building and experiencing marine leisure infrastructure.
A marine culture center that provides hands-on experience will be built near a lighthouse, while a national lighthouse marine culture museum and the Ulleung Island Haengnam Lighthouse Healing Road is set to be developed as national projects.
With the opening of the Pohang KTX Station and the Sangju-Yeongdeok Expressway, the Province expects more tourists to visit the eastern coast, and is accordingly planning to develop more marine tourism resources.
