South Korea’s state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) said Friday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dominican Republic’s National Energy Commission (CNE) to help the Latin American state to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.


Under the MOU, KEPCO and Dominican Republic will join hands in projects to promote the use of renewable energy and exchange technology in fields including energy storage system (ESS). In its first move, KEPCO will launch a project to boost energy efficiency including solar and wind power and expand EV charging facilities in the Latin American country.

In such projects in Latin America, KEPCO aims to use networks and equipment developed by domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) to contribute to export growth, KEPCO CEO Cho Hwan-eik said. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) of the Dominican Republic announced a pilot project to establish EV charging infrastructure from Santo Domingo, the capital city to Punta Cana on the east coast of the country.

As it is an island country, drivers can travel anywhere with a single charge, Jesus Salvador, minister of MIC said, adding that he hopes to introduce Korea’s outstanding EV charging technology to the country.
