Garbage tracking and pickup will become smarter with South Korea’s leading wireless carrier LG Uplus Corp. ready to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) technology to trash cans and trucks.

A trial service that would begin in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, will save city trash collectors from making the routine early morning rounds as they would know what neighborhoods require emptying first by tracking the trash status.

The country’s third-largest telecom company and Goyang City were chosen by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning as test bed for IoT-based smart city.

The wireless-connected system would help to rationalize the work for city cleaners as it would tell what neighborhoods need emptying fast and what could be passed for the day.

The garbage cans will be fitted with the IoT sensors and automatic trash compactor - using solar panels on the top - to notify sanitation workers when to pick up trash and hold more waste than a regular can.

The company plans to expand the high-tech disposal system to 200 spots in the city.
