According to Yonhap News,
(INCHEON=Yonhap News) Incheon's cruise industry is expected to create an annual economic impact of KRW 50 billion begining one year after the Incheon Port Cruise Terminal opens in 2019.
Incheon City announced this estimate during a forum for devising a strategy to nurture the local cruise industry held by the city government, the Incheon Port Authority and the Incheon Port Development Council on November 10 at the Incheon Culture & Arts Center.
The city estimated that should 400,000 cruise tourists visit the city in 2020, the economic impact could amount to KRW 56.2 billion.
Currently, construction is taking place at Incheon Port to create a cruise ship dock big enough for a 225,000-ton mega vessel, and a two-story cruise terminal covering 2,364 square meters by October 2018.
To attract a greater number of cruise tourists to the city, Incheon plans to create new tourism infrastructure including national security-related tourism sites, inner harbor redevelopment sites, ecological islands, and develop various events and programs for existing popular attractions such as the local China Town, Wolmido Island, and the Bupyeong Underground Shopping Mall.
Incheon will also seek to reinforce local tour programs with foreign cruise lines and travel agencies, as well as hold a cruise travel exposition in the city.
Earlier, Incheon Port Authority signed a charter agreement global cruise line Costa Cruises and Lotte Tour Development for a cruise ship charter that uses Incheon Port as its home port starting May 2018.
A home port is the port at which a vessel is based for the beginning of a cruise itinerary, as opposed to a port of call where a ship makes an intermediate stop on its itinerary.
The 114,000-ton cruise ship Costa Serena, capable of carrying 3,780 passengers is scheduled to leave Incheon Port in May 2018 for a 6-day cruise that stops at Japan (Okinawa and Ishigaki), Taiwan (Taipei) and Busan.
