Korea to hike food self-sufficiency rate to 55 pct in 2022
Date
2018.02.08

According to Yonhap News,

(SEJONG=Yonhap News) Korea will push to significantly raise its food self-sufficiency rate of grain, rice and others over the next five years to counter a rise in imports and security concerns, the farm ministry said Tuesday.

Korea plans to locally supply 55 percent of its overall food consumption by 2022, sharply up from the 50.9 percent tallied in 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said.

The ministry said it plans to create an ecosystem to maintain a sustainable expansion in the agricultural sector, and to counter a drop in farmers and investment.

To that end, so-called smart farm innovative centers will be established across the country to find new revenue sources for the sector, according to the ministry.
