Three South Korean startups have been selected by the World Economic Forum as Technology Pioneers of 2021 for their innovative technologies that can improve people’s life.

It is the first more than one Korean origin made the annual list.

WEF named three Korean startups—DoBrain, MakinaRocks, and Standard Energy—in its list of the 100 most promising Technology Pioneers of 2021 announced Tuesday (local time). The list brings together emerging technology startups that are taking on global concerns such as climate change and gaps in healthcare with innovative technologies and business models. Past recipients of the award include big names like Google, Twitter, Airbnb and Spotify.

AI-based learning platform DoBrain offers accessible and affordable learning solutions for toddlers, preschoolers, and those with learning disabilities. Founded in 2017, it is actively expanding its business overseas. So far, nearly 600,000 children worldwide have used the app.

MakinaRocks specializing in industrial machine intelligence is taking the lead in improving industrial environment through its machine learning-based software solutions, which detect anomalies in equipment, increase product quality, and improve process control.

Standard Energy, a manufacturer of vanadium ion battery, is driving innovation in the energy distribution. Unlike lithium ion batteries, the novel vanadium ion batteries have longer-term capacity retention and zero ignition risk, the company explained.
