(Seoul=Yonhap News) The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), the Korea Overseas INfrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND), and the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA) announced on June 23 that 11 cases (11 countries) have been selected for this year’s K-City Network Global Cooperation Program.
This program has been planned based on inter-governmental cooperation to identify smart city projects and support Korean companies enter overseas markets. The program is divided into sub-programs: urban development planning, smart solution, and smart solution demonstration in foreign countries.
The urban development planning is to support establishment of plans - i.e., master plan, feasibility study - to apply smart solutions to urban development projects in foreign countries. 4 selected projects are: Clark Freeport smart city in the Philippines; Pilot housing complex for public officials in Indonesian New Capital City; Innovative complex and smart city in Tashkent of Uzbekistan; and central station smart city in Nairobi, Kenya.
The smart solution is to suggest smart solutions for major urban problems including traffic and environment, and to support setting up establishment and operational plan. In this category, 4 projects have been selected such as: establishing traffic management systems in Haiphong, Vietnam; waste-energy linked project in Santa Cruz, Bolivia; setting up broadband Internet networks (LoRa) in Baku, Azerbaijan; and building an integrated monitoring and control center in Kazanlak, Bulgaria.
The solution demonstration, a program introduced this year, is to provide South Korean companies with overseas demonstration opportunities. 3 projects have been selected: Samsung SDS will demonstrate its smart city platform in Gaziantep, Turkey; Ecube Labs will demonstrate its waste management solution in Baltimore, the United States.; and Dtonic will demonstrate its smart partking service in Santander, Spain.
The Ministry will fix project budgets within this month and select projet operators next month.
