According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea,

OpenAI, the service behind the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot ChatGPT, has expressed keen interest in forging partnerships with Korean chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc.

Sam Altman, the company’s chief executive officer, said he visited Korea twice in the past six months and had good meetings with Samsung and SK hynix when asked by Korean reporters if there were any plans for a semiconductor partnership with the Korean chipmakers during a meeting at the company‘s headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday (local time). Altman visited Korea in late February 2024 and met with top executives from both Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. This is the first time he has publicly revealed his interests to Korean reporters.

The CEO’s unexpected appearance took place at an event focused on fostering collaboration between Korean startups and OpenAI, organized by the Korean Ministry of SMEs and Startups., Altman engaged in detailed discussions with reporters and startups at the gathering.

When asked about OpenAI’s potential venture into chip manufacturing, Altman underscored the company‘s ambition to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), capable of human-like thinking, learning, reasoning, and problem-solving. Notable figures in the field, including Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jensen Huang, predict the arrival of the AGI era within a 5-to-10-year period.

The company still seems to have a proclivity for potential global partnerships. While expressing a willingness to minimize efforts in AGI development, Altman indicated that OpenAI is open to working with established chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

Regarding GPT-5, the forthcoming version of ChatGPT, Altman expressed confidence in its improved performance and hinted at advanced reasoning capabilities without specifying a release date. Industry experts expect significant advancements in GPT-5’s reasoning abilities, as showcased in a recent demonstration featuring a humanoid robot developed in partnership with Figure AI Inc. The robot showcased precise responses, including handing over an apple when asked for food, accompanied by explanations for its choices.

When asked about the most anticipated aspects of the impending AGI era, Altman cited scientific breakthroughs, emphasizing AI models‘ potential to expedite such discoveries, which he views as crucial for sustained long-term economic growth.

Altman also expressed concern about the pace of AI learning outpacing human-generated data, underscoring the need for AI models capable of learning efficiently with limited data. But he predicted that “AI agents” that can understand human speech and perform tasks on behalf of users are still a long way off due to network capabilities.

OpenAI is currently one of the largest users of graphics processing units in the world. ChatGPT is used by 100 million people every week, and its AI video generator, Sora, which will be released to the general public later in 2024, is expected to require much more computing power than ChatGPT.
