According to Yonhap News,
The government will invest 31 billion won (US$22.7 million) by 2028 in developing core technologies for smart ports as part of efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's shipping industry, the oceans ministry said Monday.
The investment will be directed toward developing key equipment and technologies for building smart port facilities, such as automated cargo handling machinery and unmanned vehicles for cargo transport, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The country has been working to transform traditional ports into smart ports to bolster its shipping capabilities, opening a fully automated terminal at a port in the southeastern city of Busan last year.
"The smart port technology is essential for ensuring the sustainable development of the port industry," Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung said, vowing government efforts to provide technological support for the expansion of smart ports in Korea.
