According to Yonhap News,
The government has designated the development of the maritime industry in preparations for the upcoming era of Arctic shipping routes and boosting food exports as national policy tasks, officials said Tuesday.
The goals were announced at a Cabinet meeting as part of 123 policy tasks to be pursued under the administration of President Lee Jae Myung.
To establish South Korea as a global maritime power in the envisioned era of Arctic shipping routes, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to complete the relocation of its headquarters to the country's major port city of Busan, about 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, by the end of this year, according to ministry officials.
The ministry aims to transform Busan into a global maritime hub for northern routes, which are expected to open up in coming years as Arctic ice melts due to global warming, by attracting major shipping companies and related public institutions to the city.
The government also decided to foster the agriculture sector as one of the nation's strategic industries, with an aim to boost its food exports to US$15 billion by 2030, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Last year, the country exported $9.98 billion worth of food products, driven by the global popularity of Korean culture.
It marked a 9 percent increase from the previous year and the highest figure in its history.
