(GUNSAN=Yonhap News) The 6th United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) Congress opened on September 5 at the Gunsan Saemangeum Convention Center in Gunsan City, North Jeolla Province, South Korea.
The four-day congress invites local government officials in the Asia Pacific region to gather wisdom and discuss collective challenges and global issues.
A number of high ranking officials from South Korean provincial governments and municipalities attended the opening ceremony. Around 680 representatives from 140 organizations including heads of local governments from 36 countries also joined the event.
Under the theme of "Regions, Life, and Culture in the New Urban Agenda", participants will cover various discussion topics including sustainable regional development strategies, leadership, city regeneration, and cultural value.
The UCLG is a worldwide association established in 1913 to promote local autonomy and encourage the exchange of information and technology among local governments.
It currently has around 1,000 local governments in 140 countries as its members, and is committed to strengthening partnerships and cooperation among its member organizations.
The biannual congress is held for the second time in Korea following 2005 event hosted by Daegu City.
