According to Yonhap News,

The northern Jeolla Province has seen the gradual increase in the number of populations. According to the northern Jeolla Province on Jan. 25, its registered residents have continuously increased from 1.854 million in 2009, 1.969 million in 2010 to 1.974 million in 2011.

Its populations recorded the largest number of 2.522 million in 1966, but decreased less than 2 million in 2002 and down to 1.85 million in 2009.

The province said the increase for three consecutive years is attributed to its aggressive efforts to attract more than 100 companies for five years and improving educational and residential environments.

Yang Sim-muk, an administrative supporter, said, "If large companies, such as Samsung and OCI, enters operation and Samangeum district develops further, the population increase will accelerate more down the road."
