Launched on July 1, 2026, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City is South Korea’s first mega-regionally integrated autonomous government.
Building upon Jeonnam’s vast oceans, islands, solar energy, and agri-bio foundation, the new city integrates Gwangju’s legacy of democracy, artificial intelligence, cutting-edge industries, and rich educational and cultural capabilities.
By seamlessly connecting AI and culture in the Gwangju area, advanced materials and ports in the Eastern zone, offshore wind power in the Western zone, and agri-bio and healthcare in the Central-Southern zone, a self-sustaining regional ecosystem is established.
Centered around a large-scale semiconductor cluster, the city is emerging as a business-friendly hub equipped with industrial land, power supply, logistics, data infrastructure, and talent development programs.
