According to Yonhap News,

British Rolls-Royce, a global ship and aero engine manufacturer, is expected to participate in the project to build an advanced complex for special-purpose ships pushed for by Jeollabuk-do.

Jeollabuk-do said on June 13, provincial officials visited the Rolls-Royce plant in Bristol, a port city in the southwest of England, on June 10 and drew a positive review on project cooperation from Rolls-Royce.

This complex is a project that has been materialized since 2020 to overcome the crisis in the shipbuilding industry in Jeollabuk-do.

It aims to renovate and repair ships used for public service and defense purposes, such as marine rescue boats, patrol boats, tug boats, and fishing guidance boats by applying eco-friendly new technology.

Rolls-Royce is a major supplier of propulsion engines and gas turbines to the Korean Navy and Coast Guard, and suitable for the advanced complex for special-purpose ships as it aims for future technologies.

The proposals the province suggested to Rolls-Royce during this visit is said to include cooperation on the transfer of gas turbine propulsion system maintenance technology and request to consider investment in the construction of testing and certification equipment.

In response, it has been said that Rolls-Royce showed willingness for project cooperation, saying it will visit Korea next month to discuss specific cooperation plans and action plans.

In addition to Rolls-Royce, the provincial officials plan to visit Babcock and BAE Systems, the three largest British defense companies, to examine possibility of cooperation in the advanced complex for special-purpose ships.
