Jeonbuk Province (Jeonbuk-do) and National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) reached an agreement to join forces in nurturing cutting-edge digital industries and locating foreign startups in the region to create a digital-startup ecosystem at a global level.

According to the province on June 23, Jeonbuk-do and the NIPA signed a memorandum of understanding to create digital-based new industries and intensify the province's global competitiveness.

In jeonbuk, a couple of NIPA's projects, including 'SW Convergence Cluster 2.0', 'Software Convergence Service Platform for Big Data-Based Smart Farms', and 'Software Mirae Chaum' have now been underway.

'Software Convergence Service Platform for Big Data-Based Smart Farms' is a project to build a data service platform designed to be used in the private sector by investing KRW 14 billion by 2024 with a range of goals of developing software convergence service, providing commercialization supports, and professional training programs.

By implementing 'Software Mirae Chaum', where the authorities will spend a total of KRW 3.2 billion by the end of this year, Jeonbuk-do is going to build an educational hub center on software which will be equipped with cutting-edge equipment such as AI and software in order to enhance digital literacy among the youth in the Jeollabuk-do.

On top of that, Jeollabuk-do is working together to attract startups from abroad. The province plans to link its efforts with NIPA's 'K-Startup Grand Challenge', a project where the NIPA serves as an accelerator to encourage foreign startups with high potential to operate in Korea.

Commissioner of NIPA Huh Sang Wook said, "With the MOU today, the NIPA affirms it will be committed to working on making digital innovation that fully embraces unique traits and contexts of the Jeollabuk-do." and "We will proactively support the Jeonbuk province to make sure local digital companies can make presence in the global market and the province is able to strengthen its competitiveness edge by locating promising startups from abroad."

Mayor of Jeollabuk-do Province Kim Gwang-young said, "Active roles of specialized agencies, like the NIPA are imperative, if we are to get over geographical limits we face as a local city when it comes to the digital industry requires. We will do everything we can to pave the way for making Jeonbuk a more vibrant province by making the most of the cooperative agreement with the NIPA."
