According to Yonhap News,

Gunsan city announced on July 17 that it will provide training programs to nurture 500 shipbuilding workers as Hyundai Heavy Industries Gunsan shipyard is struggling from labor shortage.

After recently reopening the Gunsan Shipyard, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) plans to annually produce over 100,000 tons of hull blocks this year, which requires about 1,000 workers.

The number of the employed as of June was 800 according to the data of employment insurance, meaning that the shipyard, therefore, needs 200-strong additional workforce, the city said.

Gunsan has already been conducting various projects including training new workers and hiring skilled technicians in order to address the labor shortage.

On top of that, the city will implement other 4 projects to train and nurture 500 more workers: monthly training incentives at KRW 200,000 per person; youth employment programs; rehiring programs for middle-aged workers.

It will also carry out a number of supportive policies to help migrant workers, responding to a surge of inflow of those foreign labors expected in the second half of this year.

An official of Gunsan said, "The city government will do its best to nurture not just domestic but foreign workers to ensure that the local shipbuilding industry overcomes the current labor shortage and boost its competitiveness."
