According to Yonhap News,

On April 17, Jeonnam-do announced that it has been selected for a project to develop and demonstrate power grid stabilization technologies based on distributed energy systems, along with Gwangju, Jeonbuk, and Jeju-do.

The four local governments selected for the "Mega City Advanced Development Support (R&D)" project, which is overseen by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE), plan to implement energy sector cooperation tasks from the "Honam Mega City Economic Alliance" signed last year, aimed at promoting regional economic development.

As part of this project, the four local governments will receive KRW 4.6 billion from the MOTIE to conduct research in the field of distributed energy starting over the next two years.

Jeonnam will research Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), while Jeonbuk will focus on ultra-short-cycle Energy Storage Systems (ESS).

Gwangju will work on short-cycle ESS, while Jeju will research sector coupling (P2X) to convert hydrogen energy into electrical energy. These technologies will be integrated as part of the project.

This initiative will involve industry, academia, and research innovation organizations, as well as technology-specialized companies from the energy sector across the Jeonnam, Gwangju, Jeonbuk, and Jeju-do regions, and will establish joint regional strategies for collaboration.

The project aims to establish a model for regional collaboration on power resource sharing and grid stabilization, contributing to the nationwide spread of a leading model for promoting distributed energy policies at the cross-regional level.

An official from Jeonnam-do said, "Through this Mega City collaboration project, we will support the Honam and Jeju regions in becoming innovation hubs in the field of distributed energy," adding, "We will also explore collaborative projects to strengthen the Honam Mega City Economic Alliance."
