According to Yonhap News,

Jeonbuk State is embarking on a full-scale demonstration of hydrogen production using ammonia.

On July 7th, the province signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) in Oksikdo-dong, Gunsan-si, with Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Rotem, the Fire Insurance Laboratories of Korea (FILK), and Gunsan-si to establish a hydrogen production system utilizing ammonia.

This agreement is a detailed follow-up to the hydrogen industry collaboration MOU signed between the province and Hyundai Motor in November last year. The key is to practically verify the commercial viability of ammonia-based hydrogen production technology.

Under the agreement, Jeonbuk State and Gunsan-si will provide licensing and administrative support, KOMERI will offer the demonstration site and operate the ammonia storage and supply facilities, while Hyundai Motor will design the ammonia cracker (decomposition equipment).

Ammonia (NH3) has a relatively easier liquefaction condition (-33.4°C) compared to liquefied hydrogen (-253°C), and it has a higher hydrogen storage efficiency by volume, allowing it to store more hydrogen than high-pressure gaseous hydrogen.

The project will take place at the KOMERI's Eco-friendly Ship Alternative Fuel Demonstration Center site, with completion planned by 2027.

The province expects this project to serve as a significant turning point in the localization of ammonia-based clean hydrogen production technology and the establishment of related industrial ecosystems.
