(Jeonju = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Dong-chul = A large-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center, set to become a hub for the regional digital industry, will be established in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do.
The City of Jeonju and Jeonbuk AI Data Center (JBAIDC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 20th for the "Establishment and Operation of the Jeonbuk AI Data Center." Under the agreement, JBAIDC, a special purpose company (SPC), will invest a total of KRW 300.7 billion (approx. USD 224 million) to build an AI data center with a power capacity of 9.8MW on an 11,599㎡ site in Palbok-dong, Deokjin-gu.
The project targets completion by 2027. Major consortium members, including KT (Gwangju-Jeonnam-Jeonbuk Regional Headquarters) and Microsoft Korea, are participating in this initiative. The city expects the data center to play a pivotal role in creating a regional AI ecosystem, generating high-quality jobs, and revitalizing the digital economy.
"This data center will serve as a priming water for Jeonju to leap forward as a center for the AI data industry," said Yoon Dong-wook, Acting Mayor of Jeonju.
