According to Yonhap News,

Los Alamos National Lab will build a research institute in North Jeolla Province.

North Jeolla Province said on July 4 that Los Alamos National Lab will set up a research institute that conducts joint research on management technology of structural health with Chonbuk National University.

A total of KRW 11.4 billion will be invested for 6 years as the research institute was chosen for the government's global R&D center program. .

It is the first foreign research institute in the North Jeolla Province. It aims to develop core technologies related to management of structural health and evaluation of credibility.

Los Alamos National Lab was established in 1943 in the US with the aim of developing nuclear weapon programs. It studies on safety of facilities in aviation, wind power, nuclear reactors and bio sectors. It has an annual budget of KRW 2.6 trillion and 9,000 staff members.

An official from the North Jeolla Province said that the research institute will facilitate the development of composite material-based aviation and wind power industries. This will spur the creation of carbon valley in the province.
