According to Yonhap News,

North Jeolla Province (Jeonbuk) saw an increase of 26 percent in national budgets for R&D on its strategic projects.

Jeonbuk asked for a total of 47.2 billion won for eight projects including establishing carbon valley and developing core technology of high-temperature plasma, but the National Science and Technology Commission decided to allocate 12.3 billion won Jeonbuk.

The allocation led to additional financial supports worth 2.8 billion won, 2.5 billion won, 2.2 billion won and 1.7 billion won for establishing carbon valley, building Jeongeup branch of Korea Institute of Toxicology, supporting the next-generation technology for agricultural machinery and expanding research base for radiology, respectively.

"At a time when the central government reduced R&D budgets by five percent, we worked really hard to secure necessary budgets as much as we could. We will invest the money to develop technology and accumulate relevant companies," said Roh Heung-seok, a Jeonbuk official in charge of strategic business.
