As design process for six government-funded facilities, including a food safety center and a food testing center in the National Food Cluster, are underway at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MARFA), establishment of core infrastructure appears to add momentum.

To provide a differentiated competitiveness with the National Food Cluster, a R&D-oriented Foodpolis, the project is gaining its pace to begin construction of the six government-funded facilities this year.

The facilities will be completed by 2015 on a 29,000m2 site with total investment of KRW 158.8 billion.

As budget of KRW 22.8 billion out of total construction cost (KRW 66.2 billion) is secured this year, the construction seems to begin this year without difficulties.

The MARFA, North Jeolla Province and Iksan city completed a feasibility study of the project November 2009 and approved a basic development plan last year for a rapid establishment of the six facilities. The Korean government aims at developing the National Food Cluster as a research-based export-oriented national food industrial complex. Analysis and deliberation was completed May and basic and enforcement plan for the government-funded facilities are currently underway.

When design process completes next month, the enforcement design will be submitted to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance for an approval in September to begin the construction this year.
