(SEOUL=Yonhap News) A South Korea-developed emergency service won an international award for its smart city technology, the land ministry said Friday.

The International Data Corporation (IDC) annually selects winners of Smart City Asia Pacific Awards to recognize leading smart city projects in the region excluding Japan. South Korea's Daejeon 119 Emergency Service, developed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, won in the public safety category, one of the 14 sectors awarded.

The service collects all necessary information on the site of the accident, including rescue plans, traffic and closed-circuit video of the area, at 119 centers in a single platform to expedite rescue operations. It was established first in Daejeon, a major city south of Seoul, and will be installed in six other cities within this year.
