According to Yonhap News,

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News) Jordan's first nuclear research reactor built by Daejeon-based Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Daewoo E&C has successfully produced isotopes for medical purposes, the institute said Tuesday.

The Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR) located on the campus of Jordan University of Science and Technology has produced radioactive iodine, also known as I-131, that is used for treating thyroid cancer.

The JRTR is the first nuclear facility exported by South Korea and is Jordan's first atomic reactor. The facility, which took US$160 million to build, was set up to promote neutron science and technology and the production of radioactive isotopes for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

"The institute will continue to transfer our experience and technology to countries, not only Jordan, that want to build a nuclear energy program for the first time," said Ha Jae-joo, head of KAERI.

The JRTR is scheduled to begin full-scale production of I-131 once it receives further approval from the Jordanian government.
