According to Yonhap News,

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News) South Korea's aerospace institute said Wednesday it transferred drone swarm flying technology to a local company so it can be developed for commercial applications.

The technology handed over to Dream Visions Co. is based on Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) GPS, an extremely precise and accurate satellite navigation system, according to the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

The institute said RTK systems can accurately and precisely check and calculate the position of all machines in formation to prevent collisions from occurring and allow the machines to move in predesignated patterns or in sync with each other. It has a margin of error of around 10 centimeters, making close formation flying possible.

"The technology can be applied for cases such as searching for missing persons and crop management when integrated with artificial intelligence (AI)," a KARI source said.

He said tests have shown that large numbers of drones can be controlled safety and that KARI is committed to working with the private sector to further develop the know-how for broad applications down the road.
