According to Yonhap News,

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News)"Open Lab", an open-type research lab, which used to be supported in innovation city, opens in Daejeon.

On September 3, Daejeon Metropolitan City announced that it was selected for Open Lab, run by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).

Open Lab refers to a research platform within public organizations, jointly utilized by corporations or research centers.

MOTIE set up Open Lab in innovation cities to revitalize services for local companies by taking advantage of public organizations, and supervised local industrial ecosystem in such areas as technology development, corporate support, and network support.

Daejeon was not eligible to receive support for Open Lab project as it was not an innovation city. However, the city continued to request MOTIE and the Ministry of Economy and Finance and finally got approval.

Daejeon plans to invest a total of KRW 7.1 billion, including national budget of KRW 5 billion, by 2022 to foster the 5G-based IoT mobile sector in cooperation with Daedeok Innopolis.
