According to Newsis,

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration and Daejeon-si signed a business agreement on the 29th at Daejeon City Hall to build a drone-specialized defense innovation cluster.

Through this agreement, a regional consultative body composed of industry, academia, research and military representatives will be operated, and the Daejeon Cluster Project Group will be established at the Defense Technology Promotion Institute.

KRW 49 billion will be invested (Central Government KRW 24.5 billion, local government KRW 24.5 billion) for specialized research institutes in the drone field, infrastructure construction, and job-specialized projects by 2026.

Daejeon-si is home to more than 230 defense-related organizations and companies, such as the Defense Science Research Institute and the Army Logistics Command. There are about 30 drone-related companies, and the city was finally selected as a drone special zone in February last year.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said, "The importance of drones as a game changer is being highlighted. Currently, Korea's military drone technology rated at 89% of the world's best, but military drone companies still rely on imported parts for their main components.""As of 2020, drone companies as the number of emissions remains the 7th in the world, it is even more urgent to develop domestic drone-related technologies and expand infrastructure.”

Donghwan Eom, Director of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, said, "The Daejeon Defense Innovation Cluster will actively support the development of the drone sector among the defense advanced strategic industries by intensively nurturing the drone sector and strengthening the capabilities of defense companies to grow into a mecca for defense drones. We will try our best to actually contribute to the local economy by creating synergies between regions, including those in the region.”
