According to Yonhap News,

Daejeon fails to be designated as a national high-tech industrial complex specialized in semiconductor by the central government.

The city said on July 20 even though its original plan was foiled, it will do proceed with its own chip-industry-fostering project by fully utilizing resources of industries, academic and R&D institutes in the local area.

The city government is going to build a R&D innovative industrial complex, where research, educational, designing and manufacturing facilities will be located, on 5.3 million ㎡ of land that was originally planned to construct the national industrial complex featured by nanotechnology and semiconductors.

With this new plan, it envisions a logic-chip value chain that covers from manufacturing, production, materials, parts, and equipment.

The local government said it will start to carry out a preliminary feasibility study within this year and accelerate the process of removing the designated land from the Greenbelt and approving the industrial-complex construction plan.

The target year of completion is 2029 and now Daegeon is negotiating with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on who will be selected as the implementer.

Daeduck Innopolis is already well established boasting renowned state-owned research institutes, academic institutions, meaning that it will become the major source of talent in R&D, which is critical to foster the semiconductor ecosystem.

By tapping the excellent human resources and world-class R&D infrastructures, Daejeon plans to locate Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center (ASTC) and turn itself into a national chip hub equipped with research, educational, demonstration functions.

In addition, it will also provide upgraded supports that assist technology demonstration and development of advanced processing technology, while working on nurturing talent to meet demands from businesses.

As AI technologies have become part of our life, the Daejeon government recognized the importance of AI chips.

Therefore, it sets its sights on establishing an integrated chip ecosystem by 2031 by attracting fabless companies that design AI chips, providing startups access to design automation tools, and adding additional training and educational centers on chip design.
