According to Yonhap News,
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and Daejeon-si signed an MOU for the "development of defense semiconductors and mutual cooperation" at Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall on January 18.
Under the MOU, Daejeon-si has decided to expand public semiconductor production facilities, including large clean rooms for mass production of defense semiconductors.
It also plans to cooperate with the DAPA to create an environment for domestic production of defense semiconductors, such as fostering companies specializing in design and materials, parts, and equipment companies.
According to the DAPA, more than 98 percent of defense semiconductors are currently designed and produced overseas and applied to domestically developed weapons systems. Accordingly, if any disruptions occur to the global semiconductor supply chain, it will inevitably cause a major setback in the timely deployment of weapons systems.
The DAPA expected this MOU signing to ensure stability in the supply of defense semiconductors, and revitalize the domestic semiconductor industry, such as job creation.
