Daejeon-si' "advanced bio-manufacturing" project was finally selected for public competition for global innovation special zone by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS).
According to the Daejeon Metropolitan Government on December 9, the Global Innovation Special Zone is an advanced version of a regulation-free special zone currently in effect by the MSS, and it aims to support the development of new products in high-tech fields and entry to the global market.
Daejeon-si submitted an application in October with a plan for global innovation special zone of "high-tech bio-manufacturing based on synthetic biology".
The city plans to intensively foster the high-tech bio-manufacturing industry through a global innovation special zone that provides public infrastructure, demand-focused R&D, global expansion, and domestic deregulation.
In order to provide public infrastructure, the city plans to utilize BioFoundry at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, a leading research institute in synthetic biology in Korea, and GMP facilities at Daejeon Techno Park Bio Center for research and development and production of LMO (Living Modified Organism).
The city will also support international joint research between companies and overseas research institutes to secure excellent technologies needed by companies, while also establishing the support system for overseas certification and overseas consignment production.
The city expects this special zone project to facilitate an advanced bio manufacturing, creating jobs and new markets in various industries such as production inducement of KRW 126.6 billion and 547 employment.
