The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), along with Hannam University and the Daejeon Tourism Organization, announced that they successfully secured the hosting rights for the "2027 Photonics and Electromagnetics Research Symposium(PIERS 2027)," for the first time in Korea.
On May 6, Daejeon was finally selected as the host city through a competitive bidding process held in Abu Dhabi.
PIERS, which started at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S.A. in 1989, is an international academic conference held in various countries around the world.
The event is expected to draw over 1,500 experts in photonics and electromagnetics from around the globe, where they will present research findings and exchange the latest technologies.
The event, which will be held at the Daejeon Convention Center in for five days in May 2027, is expected to attract around 1,300 foreign participants from 40 countries, contributing to an estimated production effect of approximately KRW 5.3 billion.
To secure this event, the KTO, Hannam University, and the Daejeon Tourism Organization formed a joint bid committee and carried out a well-organized campaign. The KTO provided financial and administrative support, including strategy development and proposal preparation, while Hannam University and the Daejeon Tourism Organization conducted outreach to key member countries to gather support.
An official from the KTO stated "The successful bid for 'PIERS 2027' is an outcome of a strategic approach that leveraged the region's infrastructure and strengths."
