MSS designates new regulation-free special zones including Daejeon for space technologies and Daegu for AI robot
On May 21, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) announced that it held the 15th Regulation-Free Special Zone Committee meeting and designated three new Regulation Free Special Zones and three new Global Innovation Regulation Free Special Zones.
The Regulation Free Special Zones, which grant regulatory exceptions for a specific period to test new technologies and industries, include Daejeon, Ulsan, and Jeonbuk. ,
Daejeon has been designated as a "Space Technology Research and Utilization" zone to establish technical standards for high-pressure gas components used in space propulsion and conduct testing and demonstration. Ulsan will operate the "Ammonia Bunkering" special zone for the development and demonstration of safety technologies to supply ammonia fuel to medium- and large-sized ammonia-powered ships using mobile tank trailers.
Jeonbuk has been designated as a "Functional Food" special zone for the expansion of functional ingredients applicable to general foods and the demonstration of operating a joint factory for health supplements.
The Global Innovation Regulation Free Special Zones, which aim to support the overseas expansion of regional companies by further advancing regulation free special zones, have been granted to Daegu, Gyeongnam, and Daejeon.
Daegu will operate the "AI Robot" special zone to support the overseas expansion of companies in the special zone through development and demonstration of AI robots that meet international demand. Gyeongnam will operate the "Next-generation Advanced Satellite" zone, which supports the development of a platform for testing next-generation advanced satellite technologies and the establishment of innovative space technology regulations.
Daejeon has been designated as a "Synthetic Biology-based Advanced Biomanufacturing" special zone for improving the regulatory environment regarding risk assessment procedures for genetically modified organisms.
Minister Oh Young-ju stated, "To take the lead in new industries, flexible legal and institutional operations and the technological competitiveness of companies are crucial," adding that "In the face of growing external uncertainties such as trade disputes and the global supply chain restructuring, the regulatory free zones will support the overseas expansion of our companies and foster innovation-driven growth in the regions."
