According to Yonhap News,

SK On Co., a major South Korean battery maker, completed the construction of a pilot plant for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) earlier this week, with a goal to start commercialization by 2029, the company said Tuesday.

The pilot plant, of which a completion ceremony was held the previous day in Daejeon, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul, will produce prototypes of ASSBs and validate their quality and performance before full-scale production, the company said in a release.

Compared with lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, ASSBs, which employ solid electrolytes, provide higher energy density and improved safety, as they are more resistant to heat and pressure, thus reducing the risk of fire.

SK On will aim to produce ASSBs with 800 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L), with a long-term goal of expanding the density to 1,000 Wh/L.

The 4,600-square-meter facility will apply a "warm isostatic press-free technology" for the first time in the country, which refers to a process that applies "uniform pressure to electrodes at elevated temperatures to improve density and performance."

SK On said it has also reduced "interfacial resistance" by optimizing pressing conditions in the production process, which enables more stable charging and discharging along with a longer cycle life.

"This pilot plant will serve as a cornerstone for SK to leap forward as a strong and resilient company in addressing any changes in the business environment," SK On President Lee Seok-hee said.
