Daejeon to develop MDC based on domestically produced AI semiconductors
Daejeon-si has launched a project to develop micro data centers (MDCs) based on domestically produced artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.
On September 22nd, the city signed a business agreement for the demonstration and expansion of Korean-made AI semiconductors with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and AI semiconductor startups Rebellions and FuriosaAI.
Under this agreement, Daejeon-si plans to develop MDCs equipped with locally produced AI semiconductors, apply them to industrial sites, and expand AI-based services nationwide.
The MDCs to be developed under this project will be smaller and easier to install compared to conventional large-scale data centers.
Featuring faster response times and enhanced security, these MDCs will enable the deployment of cost-efficient, high-performance AI services across various sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and local governments.
Rebellions and FuriosaAI, both recognized in the market for their technological competitiveness, will play leading roles in the project.
A total of 19 organizations, including ETRI, will support joint research and demonstration activities.
Daejeon-si plans to invest KRW 32.4 billion in the project, which will continue through December 2029.
