According to Newsis,

[Daejeon = Newsis] Reporter Kwak Sang-hoon = Daejeon Metropolitan City announced on the 11th that Choi Seong-ah, Vice Mayor for Political, Economic, and Scientific Affairs, visited the site of CES, the world's largest IT and consumer electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas since the 6th. After touring the technology exhibitions of participating companies, Vice Mayor Choi moved to the Bay Area in California to visit Bakar BioLabs and Amprius Technologies.

The California Bay Area, an area near San Francisco that includes Silicon Valley, is a representative innovation hub where world-class high-tech and biotech research are concentrated.

Alongside major universities such as UC Berkeley and Stanford, it is home to a high density of research institutes and global corporations in various fields, including bio, semiconductors, AI, and aerospace. It has formed a research and industrial ecosystem where academia and industry are closely linked.

The city visited Bakar BioLabs, located on the UC Berkeley campus, to examine the bio-research and startup support environment centered around the university.

During a meeting with the management of Bakar BioLabs, Vice Mayor Choi received explanations regarding the institution’s operational structure and startup support system. She personally observed the shared research spaces, equipment management methods, and the collaborative structure between resident companies and researchers.

She paid particular attention to the process by which university research results lead to startups and early commercialization. She discussed ways to cooperate on elements that could be linked with Daejeon’s strategic projects in the bio and advanced materials sectors, which the city is currently prioritizing. Subsequently, she visited Amprius, an innovative company in the battery sector, to tour its technology center and research facilities.

Amprius is a New York Stock Exchange-listed company that develops silicon-anode-based lithium-ion batteries. With strengths in high energy density and lightweight design compared to conventional batteries, its technology is applied in fields requiring high-performance batteries, such as aerospace, drones, and defense.

Vice Mayor Choi personally toured Amprius’ technology center and R&D sites to observe the battery technology development process, research organization management, and key application cases.

"We will continue to build a foundation for cooperation so that exchanges between universities, companies, and research institutes can lead to strengthened technological competitiveness and global expansion for local companies," said Vice Mayor Choi Seong-ah.
