According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 15th, the city was finalized for the 'Innovative Drug R&D Acceleration Platform Construction Project' organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), successfully securing KRW 9.94 billion in national funds. Consequently, the city will also gain momentum in fostering its Bio Specialized Complex, which is currently being established with a total investment of KRW 14.2 billion.
The core of this project is to construct an infrastructure that supports the advanced characterization and uation of biopharmaceuticals to reduce the time and costs required for advanced biopharmaceutical development, while providing customized data analysis services essential for clinical trials and product approvals. For this public auction, the city actively presented its outstanding regional bio-infrastructure and research capabilities in cooperation with the Daejeon Technopark (DJTP), the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI), and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB).
Daejeon was finalized for the Innovative Drug R&D Acceleration Platform Construction Project as it was highly recognized for the growth potential of its regional bio-industry and its excellent performance in supporting enterprises. The city plans to establish relevant support systems over five years until 2030 within the Daejeon Bio Startup Center, which is currently being constructed in Jeonmin-dong, Yuseong-gu. Starting from the second half of this year, the city will also begin supporting regional bio-enterprises in commercialization and global market expansion through expert technical guidance.
In particular, this project focuses on providing support for characterization and CMC—areas considered the greatest bottlenecks in the early stages of drug development. CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls) is the process of standardizing and verifying the raw materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control systems of biopharmaceuticals, serving as an essential procedure for clinical trial approvals, mass production, and technology transfers. As bio-enterprises have previously faced difficulties securing relevant data independently, the construction of this platform is expected to substantially enhance R&D efficiency.
Yu Se-jong, Director General of the Future Strategic Industry Bureau of Daejeon, stated, "The selection for this project is a meaningful achievement that once again recognizes Daejeon's excellent bio-ecosystem and research capabilities." He added, "We will actively provide support so that regional enterprises can rapidly expand into the global market by accelerating the development of advanced innovative biopharmaceuticals."
The Daejeon Bio Startup Center, where this platform will be housed, is scheduled to commence full-scale operations in the first half of next year. Equipped with 28 tenant spaces and shared equipment rooms, it is slated to perform a pivotal role as a core bio-hub supporting the entire lifecycle of regional bio-ventures from startup to growth.
