[Sejong=Newsis] Reporter Kim Dong-hyun = Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is joining hands with industry, academia, and research figures, including the Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology (KICET), to achieve self-reliance in Korean Solid Oxide Cell (K-SOC) technology and foster its industrial ecosystem.
KHNP announced on the 26th that it held a "Preparatory Meeting for the Launch of a Consultative Body to Foster the Korean Solid Oxide Cell Industrial Ecosystem" in Daejeon to discuss strategies for building a research and development alliance.
Previously, domestic research and development on solid oxide cells was fragmented across individual institutions, failing to drive the development of the relevant ecosystem. KHNP plans to establish an industry-academia-research collaboration platform through this consultative body, linking the entire process from research and development to demonstration and commercialization.
As the anchor enterprise of the consultative body, KHNP will set the direction for technology development necessary for demonstration and commercialization, while KICET will play a central role in supplying core industrial technologies.
KHNP is currently developing technology to utilize process heat generated from nuclear power plants for high-temperature water electrolysis. High-temperature water electrolysis is a method of electrolyzing water in a vapor state at high temperatures. Supplying part of the energy required for electrolysis through nuclear process heat is expected to enhance clean hydrogen production efficiency and economic feasibility.
An official from KHNP stated, "Going forward, we will reflect the opinions of industry, academia, research institutions, and the consultative body to contribute to fostering the Korean solid oxide cell industrial ecosystem and link these efforts to demonstration projects."
