Accommodating 273 smart factories, the city of Daegu said on Jan 12 the authorities outstripped their targets once set to facilitate 245 production plants within the communities last year. Based upon the achievement, the city rolled out an update to turn the existing 1,821 manufacturing facilities, which take up nearly 55% of all the registered entities, into factories that are highly digitized through connected systems and the latest technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) to help small enterprises further improve product quality and meet customer demand. Fort those selected as the candidates for the smart factory program, the authorities cover almost 50% of the spending, adding other forms of financial supports sourced from city budgets.

Pacific X Auto Corporation (PXA), a precision machining specialist producing transmission parts mounted on automobiles, said they’ve added 52.4% and 17% in sales and factory capacity ratio, while dropping production cost by 9% year-over-year, once they adopted the model of manufacturing execution system (MES) for digital factories.

Investing as much as KRW 36.5 billion into the program, the city and Daegu Technopark will gear up for the advance in smart factories, running an HR training program with universities citywide to pool talents and highly skilled workforce to work in smart facilities.
