Jeju to turn the World Natural Heritage Site into Metaverse content...for being selected as a government project

The Jeju World Natural Heritage site will be built into an expanded virtual world called the Metaverse, providing a service that allows you to experience the places as if they are real.

The Jeju Provincial government announced on July 11 that it was finally selected for the '2022 Metaverse Platform Development Support' public contest supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and hosted by the Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA).

This project supports local content for the establishment of an industrial ecosystem, as a new type of project supporting development of the expanded virtual world (metaverse), which is is differentiated from existing platforms in various areas, such as daily life and economic activities.

It is planned to be completed by 2023 with a total of investment of KRW 2.24 billion, including KRW 1.54 billion from the national budget and KRW 700 million from local budget.

Since last year, the provincial government has prepared an super-regional metaverse agreement with Daegu-si and Gwangju-si to discover region-based metaverse super-regional services and respond to government projects, and attracted this public contest project based on mutual cooperation.

The main content of project is to develop content and service for the development of region-specific metaverse services aimed at revitalizing the local economy. It will be about urban spatial information and region-specific tourism services of Jeju-Daegu-Gwangju.

Under the themes of 'Nature (World Natural Heritage) tourism' in Jeju, 'Industrial tourism' in Daegu, and 'Art tourism' in Gwangju, the cities plan to create future growth engines and pursue to play a role as a tourism metaverse city that creates a virtual economic circle by utilizing inter-regional infrastructure.

Jeju will build a virtual space where you can experience the World Natural Heritage Villages such as Geomunoreum and Manjanggul Lava Tubes, and provide video services about major attractions related to Haenyeo in Udo Island, which is listed as Global Geoparks.
