According to Yonhap News,

Kakao Group said Thursday it plans to raise 50 billion won (US$36.1 million) over the next five years to support artificial intelligence (AI) research at the country's four state-run science institutes.

Under the agreement, Kakao will back research activities at national institutes of science and technology in Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu and Ulsan to foster regional AI ecosystems, the company said.

Kakao will use the funds to support startups, train AI experts and improve regional AI literacy.

Detailed programs will be discussed with the institutions, it added.

The group said its investment arm, Kakao Investment Co., will fund startups launched by institute personnel, while affiliates such as Kakao Mobility Corp. and Kakao Bank Corp. will offer mentoring programs.

"It is our vision to support regional AI transformation by establishing a virtuous cycle across education, research and startups, while decentralizing resources currently concentrated in the greater Seoul area," the company said.
