According to Yonhap News,

(Daegu = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Kang-il – Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 28th that it has established the 'AI-based Humanoid Robot Manufacturing Specialized Center' at the Daegu Machinery Components Research Institute (DMI).

The project was propelled as part of the 'Robot Flagship Regional Infrastructure Construction Project' organized by the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA). A regional consortium of industry, academy, and research institutes—led by DMI alongside the Kyungpook National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and IM Robotics—participated to establish the infrastructure for humanoid robot demonstrations.

Over approximately 11 months from July last year to this month, a total project cost of KRW 2.37 billion—comprising KRW 950.0 million in national funds, KRW 950.0 million in municipal funds, and KRW 470.0 million from private investments—was injected to advance research and development (R&D) and demonstrations.

This project focused on laying the technical and demonstration foundation for humanoid robots that can be immediately deployed to manufacturing sites. The implementation centered on four main areas: establishing a manufacturing-specialized stronghold, securing core component technologies, fostering specialized enterprises, and creating a collaborative network.

In particular, the 'bipedal humanoid robot platform' developed through this project stands 140 centimeters tall and weighs 50 kilograms. It enhances field applicability by minimizing discrepancies between virtual environments and actual manufacturing sites, while achieving significant milestones in the domestication of core technologies.

An official from Daegu Metropolitan City stated, "We expect the center to drive the development of the regional advanced robot ecosystem by generating synergies with the National Robot Test Field infrastructure."
