Daegu has become the first city in Korea to organize the 15th International Biotechnology Symposium and Exhibition 2012 (IBS 2012).

The IBS 2012 is held at Daegu Exhibition Convention Center (EXCO) for six says from Sunday under the theme of "Innovative Biotechnology for Green World and Beyond." About 20,000 biotechnology experts and researchers from 50 countries attend to discuss the future role of biotechnology.

World-renowned professors will deliver keynote speeches and 160 biotechnology experts will give lectures during the symposium.

Israeli biologist Aron Ciechanover, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for characterizing the method that cells use to degrade and recycle protein using ubiquitin, will make a keynote speech on protein degradation mechanism and its relevance to human diseases.

Stanford University Professor Stanley Cohen, a representative researcher in recombinant DNA technology, will give a lecture on past and future of biotechnology.

Panel members will have in-depth discussions on applied microbiology, bioenergy and medical and biotechnology.

Sixty companies and institutions display their products including new medicine and functional food on the third floor of EXCO.

Anyone can participate in the symposium with the entrance fee of 10,000 won.

The symposium had been organized every four years since the first one in Rome, Italy in 1960, but changed to be held biennially since 2008.
