According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Dong-gu of Gwangju City has won national budget of KRW 1 billion to initiate its Asian Food and Culture Zone Development Project.

This achievement has been made in ten years since a committee was organized in August 2006 to create the 'Asian Food and Culture Zone' at the shopping district near the old city hall in Dong-gu, Gwangju.

Dong-gu originally came up with the plan to create an international food culture themed tourist destination in preparation for the opening of the Asia Culture Center.

Although the project had been pushed forward following annual plan until 2020 with estimated budget of KRW 24.5 billion, it failed to secure funds in 2015 and 2016 after receiving national budget of KRW 250 million in 2014.

Dong-gu expects to launch the project from next year by adding KRW 1 billion city government fund to the 1 billion received from the central government. As part of the project, it plans to support startups founded by young entrepreneurs, attract foreign restaurants, and hold food culture festivals and cultural events.

In order to build infrastructure for the cultural zone, Dong-gu will also repair road, install sculptures, and create green spaces.
