Gwangju Signs MOU with Qualcomm Institute to Accelerate Establishment of a Smart City

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) Gwangju Metropolitan City signed an MOU on Mutual Cooperation to Build Smart City with Qualcomm Institute from the U.S. on November 1 at the City Hall.

Smart City is a concept of enhancing the quality of people's lives by resolving urban problems such as transportation and public services through big data, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT).

Through the MOU, Gwangju and Qualcomm Institute agreed to jointly develop key technologies for creating smart city, enhance technology exchanges and establish mutual cooperation network.

In particular, Gwangju will cooperate in establishment of Qualcomm Institute Gwangju Office to promote development of smart city joint research, which will support the big data of the city including healthy old age, citizen safety, energy management and intelligent transportation.

In addition, they will work closely to support joint research projects, seminars and symposiums and build close network through exchanges between researchers, engineers and college students.

"We expect that the MOU will serve as a bridgehead for cooperation as well as the network between industry, research and public sector to realize the smart city technologies which will actually enhance the quality of citizen's life." said, Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju.
