According to Yonhap News,

Gwangju is gradually realizing a leap forward as a leading city in AI in two years since starting the project of creating an artificial intelligence-centered industrial convergence cluster (AI cluster).

According to Gwangju City and the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Project Group on March 30, the first phase of the AI cluster construction project (2020-2024) has been going as planned for the three years since being selected as a project exempted from preliminary feasibility study for the balanced national development in 2019.

The AI cluster started its construction on November 22 last year and is set to be completed in 2023.

Although the AI data center, the core infrastructure, is yet to be completed, it has been providing services to companies by renting a private cloud since May last year.

In October last year, the government decided to foster Gwangju as 'the innovation base for state-of-the-art national artificial intelligence', centered on the second phase of the AI cluster project (2025-2029).

Gwangju-si expected that the project will gain further momentum if the 'Creation of Korea's AI Representative City', one of the presidential campaign pledges for Gwangju by President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol, is adopted as a national task of the new government.

The environment for demonstration also has been established in Gwangju's main industries, such as automobiles, energy, and healthcare.

The Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Bitgoeul Senior Health Town, and Gwangju Green Car Promotion Center are operating demonstration centers for each respective field.

The establishment of a large autonomous driving simulator is also underway, while the AI startup camp has started to support the production of prototypes and investment attraction.

Gwangju-si signed MOUs with 145 companies and institutions, and 94 of them opened corporations or offices in Gwangju.

Four universities in Gwangju are offering undergraduate courses for AI convergence, and the AI Academy is cultivating high-quality working-level personnel.
