According to Newsis,

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a sisterhood relationship between Gwangju-si and City of Sendai, two mayors had a virtual meeting and they agreed to actively go ahead with the project of enhancing friendship for the advancement of both cities on Oct. 17.

Back in 2002, the two cities set up a sisterhood relationship and have exchanges in various fields, from sports and education, to culture and welfare. As recovering normalcy with the curbed COVID-19, they decided to find new cooperation plans to broaden personnel and economic exchange.

"Gwangju has grown into a principal city of AI, a hub for culture and art, and it also serves as a place for education in democracy and globalization. "Mayor Kang said.

He also added, "marking the 20th anniversary of establishing the sisterhood relationship, Deputy Mayor and a performance team from Sendai visited Gwangju. And we plan to invite the main players to the e-sports competition this December. We hope this contributes to elevating cultural competition as well as a mutual understanding between the two cities."

Also, a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary was held on the first floor of the city hall, and Gwangju delegates will be dispatched to Sendai in the coming December.

Sendai Mayor Kōri Kazuko said, "for the past two decades Korean culture has gained popularity especially in drama, K-pop and food. We expect that expanded personnel exchanges and other ways enable an energetic interchange. "

Mayor Kōri also requested Mayor Kang to pay a visit to the 40th National Urban Garden Fair to be held in Sendai next April.
