According to Yonhap News,

Newly published is a book that describes an expanding 100-year history of Gwangju-Jeonnam's local, new paper, starting with its inception.

A journalism research center at Chonnma National University revealed that the book 'A Century of Gwangju-Jeonnam Newpaper' spans years from the End of the Joseon Dynasty to the Fifth Republic of South Korea.

The book begins with the 1899 Mokpo Newspaper, published by the Japanese, mainly features papers made by Japanese staffers.

Right after the liberation of Korea, on Aug. 31, 1945, Jeonnam Ilbo was published, ushering in the advent of newspapers written in Korean.

The book also details numerous cases where many newspapers met their demises throughout the Korean War and military dictatorship.

Yoo Jong-won, the head of the journalism center, noted, "As most of the early-stage journalists passed away and relevant materials were gone, the center faced a great deal of difficulties, but there is significance in organizing the whole history systematically," adding, "Such a blessing to see the fruit of the work, though belatedly, and we will further continue to add more details to the book."
