Gwangju is in a bid to host the Overseas Koreans Agency that oversees policies regarding as many as 7.32 million Koreans living abroad.

The city announced on Feb. 28 that it had delivered a letter of intent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

And the city expresses its hope to attract government agencies, bring more people to the region, vitalize the economy, and highlight its democratic and inclusive image.

Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jeong said, "Inclusive city Gwangju is the best place equipped with rich infrastructure and global network to support overseas Koreans," adding, "Since there is little public institutions, we hope to see consideration for balanced national development."
